I am Prof. Patrice D. Cani, Full Professor of Physiology, Metabolism, and Nutrition at UCLouvain in Brussels, Belgium, and Visiting Professor at Imperial College London. My scientific journey began with a degree in Dietetics, followed by advanced studies in Human Nutrition, Health Sciences, and a PhD in Biomedical Sciences (see my CV).
Over the years, my research has focused on a fascinating question:
how can nutrition and gut microbes shape our health?
By exploring this interplay, my team and I aim to better understand and hopefully combat obesity, type 2 diabetes, cancer, and chronic inflammation.
My motto is simple: “In Gut We Trust”
I believe that unlocking the secrets of the gut microbiota is one of the most promising frontiers in medicine. Along this path, I have been fortunate to work with brilliant colleagues across the world, publish over 400 scientific articles, and see some of our discoveries open doors to new therapies. I am also deeply committed to education and mentoring, as I strongly believe that science is not only about advancing knowledge, but also about sharing it.
This blog will be my space to reflect on science, teaching, and innovation, sometimes by simplifying complex ideas for a broader audience, sometimes by sharing personal thoughts on the life of a researcher.
Thank you for reading, and stay tuned for the next posts where I will dive deeper into topics such as the role of specific bacteria in metabolic health, the discovery of new microbes like Dysosmobacter welbionis, and the exciting challenges of linking nutrition, the brain, and the microbiota.
